In
una stazione di metrò, in una notte d'estate a Central
Park due uomini si incontrano: Jerry una sorta di poeta
di strada, indubbiamente un uomo libero e Peter, un uomo
tutto casa e famiglia, liberale, fermamente ancorato ai
suoi credo; tra i due nasce una discussione che man mano
degenera in violenza. Tra un diverbio e l'altro una
musica triste, sognante, quasi un requiem scandisce
l'escalation finale, che porta alla morte di Jerry. E
quella musica, vuoi per l'ambientazione, vuoi per
l'intrinseca validità, è davvero difficile da
dimenticare.
Steve Brown, ex Tuxedomoon, con questa colonna sonora
firma il suo personale capolavoro: idee precise,
ispirate, conseguenti, confluiscono senza il minimo
cedimento in questa musica piena di presagi.
La prima side vede un uso maggiore di tastiere che si
rincorrono con grande abilità in una notte sacrificale;
i rumori della strada, del metrò, radio dissennatamente
accese nella città, sirene di polizia sono i rumori
concreti che si fondono con massima grazie ed abilità
nelle strutture sonore (un po' come avveniva nell'Lp dei
Tuxedomoon Divine).
La seconda facciata è meravigliosamente farcita di sax
ad iniziare da Central Park,
continuando nella stupenda Samba In The
Subway e trovando l'apoteosi finale
nell'assolo della conclusiva Death Of
Jerry.
Mai come in questo album Brown è coerente e concentrato:
sarà il tema notturno, il ravvicinarsi alla cultura
americana, sarà un po' di tutto questo o forse chissà
che, ma il risultato è davvero grande, superiore alle
collaborazioni con gli Exquisses e a quelle con Minimal
Compact e Biscuit superiore all'Lp solo Music
For Solo Piano.
E' ormai da quindici giorni che il disco gira sul mio
piatto ed ogni volta è davvero un godimento: d'accordo
sono un patito dei Tuxedomoon, ma diavolo, qui c'è
proprio da togliersi tanto di cappello.
Consiglio a tutti indistintamente la ricerca (che a dir
vero risulta difficoltosa data la scarsa reperibilità)
di questo album, per le notti insonni e i giorni di
riflessione. Magari quando Peter e Jerry, combattono
dentro di noi lacerati tra anarchia libertà e cinica
disillusione.
