{ Sainkho Namtchylak è nata in un
piccolo villaggio presso una miniera aurifera nella ex
repubblica sovietica di Tuva, nella Siberia meridionale,
vicino al confine con la Mongolia. I suoi nonni erano
nomadi e i suoi genitori erano entrambi insegnanti. Ha
studiato musica all’università locale ma le furono
negate credenziali da professionista dal Comitato
Filarmonico e pertanto si recò da sola a Mosca per
completarvi gli studi.
Contemporaneamente allo svolgimento del normale percorso
di studi all’università, ha anche studiato varie
tradizioni siberiane lamaiste e sciamaniche, così come
gli stili autoctoni di Tuva e della Mongolia di canto
gutturale bifonico. Successivamente ha iniziato la sua
carriera professionale come cantante folk , il Tuvan
State Folk Ensemble, facendo tournèe in Europa,
Australia, Nuova Zelanda, Stati Uniti e Canada.
Nel 1988 Sainkho iniziò a lavorare con musicisti in
Unione Sovietica, sforzandosi di fondere elementi
tradizionali etnici con generi d’avanguardia.
E’ stata membro chiave del complesso Tri-O con
Serjei Letov (sassofono), Arkadij Kiritschenko (tromba) e
Alexander Alexandrov (fagotto). Quando Sainkho si unì al
complesso suscitò l’attenzione della stampa
occidentale a causa del suo aspetto così esotico.
Improvvisamente il pubblico ebbe modo di incontrare
tonalità strane, canzoni a due voci, melodie bifoniche
fuse con il jazz, musica contemporanea e suoni
d’ambiente in un contesto transglobale. Il canto
bifonico gutturale mongolo era già noto in Occidente, ma
da quel momento è stato liberato dalla sua nicchia
nell’oasi del world-music esoterica.
