Keith Tippett aveva 22 anni quando nel 1970 registrò
questo suo secondo album come leader, originariamente
edito dalla Vertigo e diventato (giustamente) un classico
del British Jazz. Ventidue anni ! Vengono le vertigini,
perchè il disco non è solo avventuroso come altre opere
di quella bella stagione ma equilibrato, ben suonato,
capace di arrivare senza fatica a questa ristampa della
Akarma.
"Mentre c'è chi specula sulla possibilità di
ascoltare Miles Davis in session con Eric Clapton, Keith
Tippett comincia a farlo" scherzava Richard Williams
nelle note di copertina; non precisamente così ma un bel
viaggio nei suoni nuovi, con esplosioni di free e temi
più strutturati, all'incrocio tra nuovo jazz di ricerca
e un certo rock che non voleva più stare "a
posto".
Bellissimo il cast, con Marc Charigf, Nick Evans, Roy
Bobbington, e i Soft Machine dell'epoca quasi tutti:
Elton Dean compone e suona, Robert Wyatt è uno dei tre
batteristi, Hugh Hopper presta il tema (citato in Five
After Dawn) che va a intitolare il
disco.
