Un gruppo, due fuggiaschi: Daevid Allen, Kevin
Ayers. Come regolarsi? Han perso più loro a lasciare i Soft Machine o
è la confraternita, in ultima analisi, a essere stata avantaggiata
dal loro allontanamento? Free Insert: l'affare si ingrossa; nuovi nomi
e strane complicazioni.
Australiano, capellone e dallo sguardo sovversivo: questa
probabilmente l'immagine che consiglio, nel 1968, alle autorità di
frontiera di Dover, di non rinnovare il permesso di soggiorno
dell'alieno Daevid Allen. Se i Softs scopriranno il piacere di suonare
in trio, partendo poi per gli USA, Allen si ritrova praticamente
estromesso dal gruppo, a Parigi.
<<Quando persi la cosa Soft Machine arrivai a Parigi giusto con
la mia chitarra. Le prime tre cose che accaddero furono: 1) andai a
vivere assieme a una donna, una donna spaziale con la quale avevo già
vissuto e che possedeva una scatola piena di strumenti; 2) il figlio
di Errol Flynn, Sean, mi regalò la sua chitarra e un piccolo
amplificatore da 15W; 3) iniziai a giocare con questi strumenti per
vedere il tipo di suono che potevo tirarci fuori>> (Daevid Allen
a Impetus).
Ma di fianco a Allen c'è la Parigi sesantottesca, la rivoluzione
studentesca. E Allen, attento osservatore, traduce la Sorbona a fuoco
in musica: i luoghi d'incontro sono i piccoli club nei seminterrati,
estraniati quasi dai fuochi d'artificio dei "flies": <<Si
coinvolgevano tante persone quante ce ne stavano sul palco (...)
improvvisando attorno a nulla per ore e ore, alla fine completamente
sballati>> (Daevid Allen da Impetus).
E qualche intuizione incomincia ad aggregarsi ad altre: c'è il
primissimo grupettino, con Daevid e Gilly Smith, Ziska Boom e Loren,
flautista acido. Allen e consorte dividono equamente LSD ed
esperimenti di "total space music" dove, in gioco, non è la
capacità tecnica, ma bensì la creatività del momento, il guizzo.
Mentre l'Alieno picchia sulla chitarra in piena tecnica da
"glissando guitar".
In un certo senso è un'anticipazione di quello che Brian Eno, con il
libro Music For Non-Musicians, ribadì da lì a poco: la creazione
musicale può, a volte deve, essere frutto non di ripetizione di
moduli tecnici, magari collaudati all'infinito, quanto alla genialità
"istantanea", estremizzando, anche la "trovata".
Ma nell'insieme che alle produce (musica + parola + simbolismo +
teatro) l'aspetto non-musicale/musicale rimane in secondo piano: agli
spettatori parigini quello che salta agli occhi è l'immagine globale
del gruppo.
Musica indiana si sovrapponeva alla chitarra, Terry Riley veniva
strapazzato da sax e distorsori, i vestiti imbarazzavano per le
allusioni a un mitico mondo di folletti saggi; il nirvana della buccia
di banana era predicato come un nuovo vangelo.
Allen, in un'esistenza farcita abbondantemente di peyote e mescalina,
teorizza l'impossibile e crea il mito: il fratello magico e la sorella
mistica di
Magick Brother, provengono da un pianeta fino allora rimasto
sconosciuto, il pianeta Gong. <<Lo spirito che anima la realtà
Gong è chiamato in codice PHP. I Pot Head Pixies si autointroducono
mediante inchiostro figurativo attraverso attraverso un'aliena pipa
per hashish zeppa di sogni visibili. Essi sono nati in un luminoso
pianeta verde situato nell'iperspazio (buschi neri) e viaggiano in
astronavi simili per forma alle teiere; il primo contatto con il
pianeta Terra si ebbe nella Pasqua 1966 coincidendo con la visione del
potere Gong da parte dell'Alieno. I PHP hanno stabilito il quartier
generale in una regione himalayana nel Tibet, guidati dal guru gong,
in codice Octave Doctor, e usando trasmissioni radio telepatiche in
codice Radio Gnome Invisible>>.
La struttura portante è formata: per l'esplicitazione della dottrina
Gong in Terra. Daevid si associa al "Castro dell'industria
discografica" Karakos, incidendo per la Byg Magick Brother. Il disco riprende solo in parte l'anarchia
musicale dell'Allen parigino, anche se certe cose non possono che
stupire, come le cantilene ripetitive, quella Fable Of A Fredfish & Hope You Feel Ok che sembra consigliare massicciamente l'uso di
addittivi "speciali". E la vita va avanti, senza troppi
soldi in tasca, ma con quello spirito e con quell'inventiva che ben
alimentano chi dal mercato musicale riceve poco o niente. L'orticello
cresce bene.
Alla fine dei Sessanta Allen rientra in Inghilterra: forma una band
che, più dello sporadico gruppo francese, sembra essere abbastanza
salda, e registra - è il gennaio 1971 - Bananamoon, una specie di super session dell'undergound,
con Wyatr, Ratledge, Maggie Bell e Archie Leggett tra gli altri.
L'atmosfera dell'album è tra l'ilare e il faceto, con una I'm A Bowl leggibilissima come Sono In Palla e Stoned Innocent Frankestein dedicata al vechio magnate dei Softs,
l'americano Wes Brunson.
Ma Allen è già di ritorno in Francia dove, per guadagnarsi da
vivere, compone la colonna sonora per un film su Findley e Agostini,
sulle corse in motocicletta: è Continental Circus e vede già la pasta Gong stesa per benino.
C'è la monocromia delle lunghe tirate tipo Blues For Findlay ed è solo per la - ovvia, daltronte -
mancanza di testi "gongoniani" che il disco non si pone come
prima pietra dei Gong post-rivoluzione.
Neppure Obsolete dello scrittore underground Dashiell Hedayat
rende appieno la dimensione del gruppo che si sta formando: le
registrazioni erano state approntate così per caso, in uno studio per
un pomeriggio qualunque. Invece Hedayt dà in pasto alla Shandar i
nastri, sovraincidendo, ed è il colmo, la voce di Burroughs in un
pezzo (Long Song For Zelda), quasi fosse stato anche lui, il santone
beat, lì nello studio a registrare.

Is The Happiest Time Of Your Life del
1977 e N’existe Pas
sono i virus da cui farsi contagiare ancora da
quell’accattivante malattia di altri pianeti. Sono
tre albums strettamente collegati fra loro e con tutti
gli altri lavori del gruppo Gong fino al primo solo Magick
Brother.
Comunque dei tre, i primi due sopratutto, sono di una
semplicità marcata, sia di struttura che di strumenti,
mentre N’existe Pas,
pur sempre simile, è forse più generoso di spunti
vecchia maniera.
I brani come But It’s Really Not
Real e 333,
le teiere volanti sembrano ancora in aria a veleggiare
tra i sogni e fumi acidi, mentre la lucida ironia
graffiante è sempre presente ed emerge un po’
ovunque; si ascoltino per scontatare The
Freedom Of The City In
A Switable Box, They
Say, They Say e Something
Tells Me dove sono inserite cune note
dell’inno nazionale italiano subito seguito da un
spernacchione solo di sax.
Di cristallina dolcezza sono invece No
Other Than Mother Is My Song e H’s
A Fine For Flis per le soffuse
atmosfere da una vena quasi malinconica.
Il tutto coadiuvato da testi scritti secondo la
tradizione poetico-ironica di sempre, tanto densi di
ispirazione quanto complicati da tradurre a causa dei
giochi di parole che Daevid Allen spesso usa.
Il supporto strumentale è più deciso dei due precedenti
lavori, sempre con la collaborazione di alcuni musicisti
degli Euterpe, emergono fra l’altro le prove del
passaggio dei già noti Chris Cutler e George Bishop.
