Questo disco riassume il percorso
avviato da Ketil Bjørnstad e Terje Rypdal nel 1995, quando, assieme al
violoncellista David Darling e al batterista Jon Christensen, diedero
vita a The Sea, formazione tra le più rappresentative delle sonorità
scandinave ECM. Negli anni, il quartetto di origine ha dato vita a
dischi e progetti con formazioni ridotte o allargate aventi un nucleo
comune.
Due icone della scena norvegese dal background profondamente diverso,
classica la formazione di Bjørnstad e rock quella di Rypdal, ma con
un’intesa che si mostrò subito evidente e che è stata confermata dal
lungo sodalizio degli anni a seguire.
Quest’ultima fatica, registrata dal vivo a Leipzig (e frutto di un tour
iniziato nel 1999 e registrato in Germania nel 2005), è piuttosto
anomala per via degli strumenti che la compongono (piano e chitarra
elettrica), e il risultato è, nonostante il grande feeling tra i due,
una musica meno liquida e coesa di quella prodotta dal quartetto
d’origine.
I riferimenti alla natura, tipici dei musicisti scandinavi, sono
evidenti nelle sonorità e nei titoli delle composizioni.
Lo scheletro portante delle esecuzioni è costituito da brani tratti da
The Sea, intercalati ad alcune composizioni del pianista (tratte
da Water Stories, Before the Light, The Rainbow
Sessions, ecc.) e altre del chitarrista (Skywards e The
Radiosong).
Verso la metà, Bjørnstad omaggia il compositore norvegese Grieg con
Notturno, e nel finale, unica eccezione del disco, una nuova
composizione, Le Manfred, che nell’esecuzione si fonde con
Foran Peiesen.
Nel complesso un disco che non aggiunge molto al valore dei due artisti,
ma un buon modo, accessibile, per esporre un’idea di musica basata sugli
accenti classici del pianoforte e le linee melodiche muscolose della
chitarra elettrica, supportate da grande feeling e padronanza tecnica
che danno vita a paesaggi sonori eleganti e raffinati alternati a
momenti più acidi e stridenti.

Rimembranze di un sodalizio artistico, quello fra Ketil
Bjornstad (pianoforte) e Jon Christensen (batteria), che dura da almeno
un quarantennio: da quando, cioè, il drumming del secolo iniziò, al
principio degli anni '70, a vegliare senza troppi protagonismi sul tocco
speciale del pianista norvegese. Rimenbranze come sguardo rivolto al
passato, dunque, ma con la mente proiettata verso il futuro: è la prima
volta, infatti, che il sassofono di Tore Brunborg, altro grande
frequentatore del catalogo ECM, diviene co-protagonista di un lavoro che
rimane, tuttavia, intimamente di Bjornstad -di suo pugno, d'altra parte,
la stesura di tutti gli undici brani in scaletta.
Ma cosa si ascolta in Remembrance? Musica classica delle più
cristalline, quando il compositore fronteggia a viso scoperto, piano
solo, o sorretto da Christensen, il lirismo intimo di un Satie o di un
Debussy (VI e VII). Elegante jazz di matrice euro-colta -o
diremmo quasi scandinava-, e comunque profondamente ancorato a
un'impostazione classica, quando il sax tenore di Brunborg si erge a
seconda voce di una polifonia struggente che sembra parlare alla Natura
come solo i "Pezzi Lirici" per pianoforte di un altro grande norvegese,
Edward Grieg, sanno fare.
